About
This class is designed to help estheticians and skin professionals better understand, treat, and support clients with melanin-rich skin. Too often, training programs skim over the needs of skin of color, and this leads to misdiagnosis, mistreatment, or hesitation in providing services. This session focuses on breaking down the science behind melanin, the inflammatory response, and why hyperpigmentation, acne, and sensitivity show up differently in darker skin tones.
Learn safe and effective treatment strategies, including which modalities and ingredients work best—and which to avoid—to protect the skin barrier and prevent damage. We will also go over consultation techniques and culturally competent care strategies that help build long-term trust and retention with clients.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the unique characteristics of skin of color and how they impact treatment decisions.
- Recognize common conditions such as hyperpigmentation, PIH, and acne in melanin-rich skin.
- Learn which ingredients (like mandelic acid, kojic acid, PHAs, and niacinamide) are most effective and safest to use.
- Understand modality considerations for skin of color, including chemical peels, dermaplaning, LED, and more.
- Apply culturally sensitive consultation and home care recommendations to improve results and client loyalty.
